Community Academy

The Denver Police Department Community Academy is a multi-session program conducted multiple times a year, with an average of 25-35 attendees. It is designed to familiarize community members with the “how/what/why” of police procedures and to provide an opportunity for the community to interact with officers and ask questions.

The Community Academy will do its best to reflect current trends, themes, and topics, and will encourage thoughtful discussion in regard to how police operate within the community.

Participants will attend lectures and discussions on subjects such as:

  • Officer safety
  • The history of policing
  • Constitutional laws
  • Arrest/search/seizure
  • Internal Affairs process
  • Less-lethal weapons options
  • Traffic stops
  • Shoot/don't shoot scenarios in the Virtra 300 Simulator
  • Police Non-Emergency Vehicle Operations (N.E.V.O.)
  • Denver 911 Center

Officers and other experts assist with lectures and demonstrations. Upon completion of the program, participants will receive a certificate and then are able to participate in two (2) “ride-alongs” on patrol shifts and are invited to consider joining the Volunteers in Police Services (VIPS) unit.

Participants must be over 18 years of age, or 15 years of age with parental consent, and must pass a basic background check.
