COVID-19 Isolation and Quarantine Guidance

Testing positive for COVID-19 can be scary. The Denver Department of Public Health & Environment wants you to know you are not alone during this time and that resources are available to help. If you have questions about these resources, please contact 720-865-5767. Below you’ll find resources on isolation and quarantine guidance.

Isolation Guidance

While you are under isolation:

For 5 days from the day you started feeling sick, or the day you got tested if you didn’t have symptoms, you should keep yourself away from others in your home to the extent possible, wear a face covering while around others, wash your hands regularly and disinfect high-touch surfaces routinely. You should also adhere to the restrictions below:

  • You must stay at home (or designated residence).
  • You may not have visitors within the home unless they are adequately protected (fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or masked) and have an essential need to be in the home.
  • You must not attend any public or private gathering.
  • You are not allowed to physically (in-person) attend childcare, school or work
  • You may not use public transportation.
  • Wear a non-medical mask/face covering while outside

Completing isolation:

  • Stay home for five (5) days after your symptom onset date (or test collection date if you had no symptoms).
  • Continue to wear a mask around others for five (5) additional days.
  • After five (5) days, you can leave your house if you have no symptoms or your symptoms are resolving.
  • If you have a fever, continue to stay home until your fever resolves.

Isolation Calendar Example

The following calendar is an example for those that are asymptomatic (not showing signs of COVID-19/fever), or symptoms have gone away. If symptoms are still present after the first five days, continue to isolate further until symptoms are resolved.

Quarantine Guidance

For those who are unvaccinated or completed the primary series of Pfizer OR Moderna vaccine (two shots) over six (6) months ago and are not boosted OR completed the primary series of Johnson & Johnson over two (2) months ago and are not boosted:

Stay home for 5 days, then continue to wear a mask around others for five (5) additional days. If you can’t quarantine, you must wear a mask for 10 days. You should test on day 5, if possible. If you develop symptoms, you should get a test and stay home. When counting days, “day 0” is the day you were last in contact with the person confirmed to have COVID-19.

For those who have been boosted or completed the primary series of Pfizer OR Moderna vaccine (two shots) within the last six (6) months OR completed the primary series of J&J vaccine within the last two (2) months:

Wear a mask around others for 10 days. You should test on day 5, if possible. If you develop symptoms, you should get a test and stay home. When counting days, “day 0” is the day that you were last in contact with the person confirmed to have COVID-19.

This resource helps people who have lost their jobs by providing temporary wage replacement through Unemployment Insurance benefits. Unemployment Insurance helps workers’ pay their bills and contributes to the economic stability of the state.

Rental, Mortgage, and Utility Assistance

Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP)

Tenants who have been unable to pay rent due to financial hardship caused by COVID-19 may be eligible for rental assistance from their county or the State. The Colorado ERAP can help cover rent as far back as April 2020. Help can include past due, current, and two additional months of rent up to a maximum of 15 months of assistance.

Temporary Rental and Utility Assistance Program (TRUA)

The TRUA program is to assist residents of the City and County of Denver who are facing a housing crisis or hardship due to circumstances beyond their control.

Denver Human Services (DHS) Emergency Assistance

Emergency assistance is available to qualifying Denver residents only. Emergency assistance services include evictions, rental, and mortgage assistance, first month's rent and deposit assistance, and help with some energy bills.

What is COVID-19

COVID-19 is a disease caused by a virus called SARS-CoV-2. Most people with COVID-19 have mild symptoms, but some people can become severely ill. Although most people with COVID-19 get better within weeks of illness, some people experience post-COVID conditions. Post-COVID conditions are a wide range of new, returning, or ongoing health problems people can experience more than four weeks after first being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. Older people and those who have certain underlying medical conditions are more likely to get severely ill from COVID-19. Vaccines against COVID-19 are safe and effective.

Are COVID-19 vaccinations safe?

COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective. Millions of people in the United States have received COVID-19 vaccines. COVID-19 vaccines have undergone and continue to undergo the most intensive safety monitoring in U.S. history, including studies with adolescents and children.

Do vaccinations require proof of health insurance?

No. There should never be any payment for the vaccine and no health insurance coverage is required.

Where can I get vaccinated?

Are vaccines safe for children ages 5-11?

Yes. The vaccines are safe for children in this age group. Clinical trials were conducted with thousands of children and no serious safety concerns were identified.

Before recommending COVID-19 vaccination for children, scientists conducted clinical trials. The FDA gave the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine emergency authorization to use in children ages 5 through 15 years old and full approval to use in people ages 16 years and older. Learn more about the process of developing, authorizing, and approving COVID-19 vaccines.

Based on data from the clinical trial, children may have some side effects from COVID-19 vaccination, which are similar to what adults have experienced and the side effects that many children experience after routine vaccination. These side effects are normal signs that their body is building protection and may affect your child’s ability to do daily activities, but they should go away in a few days. Some children will not have side effects. Serious side effects are rare but may occur.

If I need a new vaccination card, how can I get one?

The MyColorado app’s myVaccine Record feature provides secure, convenient access to your official COVID-19 vaccination record within the Colorado Immunization Information System (CIIS) so you can show proof of vaccination wherever it's required. If you need a new vaccination card, contact the vaccination provider site where you received your vaccine. Your provider should give you a new card with up-to-date information about the vaccinations you have received.
